Prior to working as a Clinical Psychologist Nigel qualified and worked as both a Registered General Nurse and Mental Health Nurse in the UK. He worked mainly in HIV hospice settings within nursing. Nigel was then a lead researcher of a study examining Gay Men’s coping styles across the life span of their HIV/AIDS diagnoses, at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London. He gained his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from University College London and went on to work in the East End of London with Older Adults. He worked as Director of the Psychology Clinic at the University of Sydney prior to moving to New Zealand.

Particular research and clinical issues Nigel is interested in include:
- Successful ageing
- Working with people who have behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia
- Life span development.
- Clinic Director, Tāmaki
Nigel currently works as both the Director of Psychology Clinic at the University of Auckland and as a senior clinical psychologist within Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) based at Green Lane Hospital, Auckland.
