Biography

Claire has been a staff member in the Doctor of Clinical Psychology programme since 2003. Prior to that she worked in the Psychotherapy programme at the Auckland University of Technology. She has also maintained a clinical psychology practice since 1986. Claire’s professional experience is in the area of adult mental health. She has a particular interest in issues related to the Therapeutic Relationship; and in the integration of psychodynamic and cognitive approaches. Claire also has knowledge and skills in the areas of divorce, remarriage, and stepfamily living.

Research interests

Claire has two main areas of research interest. The first is the impact of family transitions of divorce and repartnering/remarriage on parents and children. Claire and her thesis students have investigated a number of aspects of post-separation.

Claire’s second area of research focuses on the therapeutic relationship and reflective practice. Claire has designed and investigated a 5 step method to assist psychologists and trainee psychologists understand and manage their countertransferential responses to clients.
