Biography
Iwi: Te Rarawa, NgāiTakoto. Currently Head of School of Psychology,University of Auckland and Principal Investigator in the University of Auckland Centre for Brain Research (CBR) and the Brain Research New Zealand - Rangahau Roro Aotearoa (BRNZ) Centre of Research Excellence. Academic background in psychology, audiology and speech science with research interests in communication disorders, auditory processing, hearing and neurological conditions. Current international collaborations include Macquarie University, Hong Kong University and University of Manchester. Previous collaborations with Oxford University (CATALISE Consortium) and National Acoustic Laboratories, Sydney.

- Communication disorders in adults and children (e.g. Welcome to School project & Hearing Screening in 3-year olds: links with developmental outcomes)
- Electrophysiological and neuroimaging investigations of auditory function
- Cochlear implants and neuroplasticity
- Auditory processing disorder (see ASHA's National Center for Evidence-Based Practice in Communication Disorders)
- Hearing loss and speech perception (e.g. Pacific Islands Families Hearing Study & Dunedin Multidisciplinary Longitudinal Study)
- Neuro-rehabilitation including choral singing therapy and Gavel Club for people with neurological conditions (including aphasia and Parkinson’s disease)
- Identification and treatment of sensory processing difficulties in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
- Te Tino Rangatiratanga o te Mate Ikura Roro (Empowering Stroke Survivors)
